A global, environmentally conscious company in the specialty coffee industry was looking for someone to create a custom controls system that would be able to run VFDs, RTDs and Electric Static Precipitators. Previously, they hired an engineer to do all the venting and duct work design for a system that would run efficiently enough for a VFD running full speed, to clear coffee roasting exhaust, while reducing the smoke, odor and CO2 being put into the air. They then needed a system that would be able to auto correct itself if it was running too hot or if the air flow could not keep up.

RMS Industries partnered with the lead engineer of this project and they were able to create a smart controls system that allowed a PLC to do the thinking. The PLC optimized the speeds of air flow and water flow for the coffee roaster exhaust cyclone. It also added benefits such as remote data logging and the ability to remotely access the systems to monitor the PLC status and the cyclone system from anywhere.

For this system, RMS Industries utilized a Horner Automation Micro X10-A. RMS was able to run two VFDs, one Pressure Sensor, and three RTD probes, plus do all the data logging for these pieces of equipment. Being able to use the Horner all-in-one system and software that is free and easy to use, was a great solution that was cost effective and robust.
