Retail Refrigeration Project

HISTORY

Refrigeration Technologies, LLC undertook the installation of energyefficient systems in the walk-in coolers, freezers, and reach-ins across hundreds of Par Mar Convenience Stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Ohio. The primary objective was to deliver cost-effective energy savings for these stores through comprehensive energy upgrades.

The installation comprised the deployment of ArtikControl™ W.I.C. (Walk-in Cooler Controller), ArtikControl™ W.I.F. (Walk-in Freezer Controller), which involved the replacement of existing Shaded Pole Motors with 2-Speed EC Motors, and ArtikControl™ (Anti-Condensation Heater Controller) for managing the Door/Mullen Heaters of the Reach-in Units.

The adoption of ArtikControl™ Controllers and Fan Motor replacements is anticipated to yield substantial annual energy savings, estimated at 3392.58 kWh per Walk-in Cooler and 11123.92 kWh per Walk-in Freezer, based on an average of 3 motors per Walk-in System per store location.

CHALLENGE/SOLUTION

The ArtikControl™ Controllers are integrated with the Horner XLe (HE-XE1E2DM-10), known for its versatility in accommodating various input and output control features, which are essential for achieving energy efficiency in walk-in refrigerated spaces. Mounted within the refrigerated space, the ArtikControl™ Controller utilizes two temperature sensors, both Type 3 10-K ohm sensors. One sensor monitors space temperature, while the other, inserted into the
coil, measures coil temperature.

The ArtikControl™ Controller, in conjunction with the Horner XLe, manages multiple functions of a Walk-in Refrigerated space. This includes temperature monitoring, compressor control, defrost management (both timed and smart defrost modes), and manual defrost activation.

Utilizing the RS-485 serial port, the Horner Controller facilitates remote monitoring via the ArtikControl™ Dashboard. This feature enables users to monitor real-time temperatures, adjust system settings remotely, receive alarms based on predefined parameters, and view a 30-day graphical display of space and coil temperatures.

Additionally, Refrigeration Technologies LLC installed an ArtikControl™ ACHC Controller for managing Anti-Condensation Heaters in Reachin doors and mullens heaters. This controller utilizes temperature and humidity sensors to calculate the air’s dew point, triggering the heaters when the dew point reaches the lower set point for a specified duration. Anticipated yearly saving of 12239.91 kWh for 18 door Reach-in Cooler. The user has the ability to remotely monitor and adjusting various set points associated with the door/mullen heaters for their location.

TESTIMONIAL

“Our customer’s original design included a Square D micro-PLC. Due to severe supply chain delays with that manufacturer, we offered our Horner controller solution as a “Plan B”. But quickly the customer realized all of the added benefits and capabilities with the Horner controller. After conversion efforts by us, Horner, and the customer; our “Plan B” quickly became “Plan A”. Today, Horner is the controller of choice for this OEM.”
